About our Coaches
Here at The Phoenix Center we take our coaches roles as teachers and mentors with the utmost of importance. As such all of our coaches are Professional Members of USA Fencing, are members of The Positive Coaching Alliance, and follow the United States Olympic Committee's SafeSport policies. We believe that kids should be able to train seriously while being in a fun, safe, and positive envionrment to achieve the goal of having a more fulfullying life. Founder & Head Coach
Coach Eric Soyka is the Founder and Owner of The Phoenix Center. Coach Eric not only brings an immense knowledge of Fencing but combines that with his backgrounds in Personal Training and Competitive Dance to help not only build great athletes but an even stronger community.
Head Sabre Coach
Coach Dennis Kolakowski runs the Kolakowski Sabre Academy out of the Phoenix Center, a regional powerhouse in developing Sabre Fencers. Dennis has been coaching top-level fencers for over almost two decades. An International Coach and Referee, Coach Dennis brings these experience to all levels of the program.
Ian Shultis is a Certified Athletic trainer, licensed in the State of New York since 2014. He has extensive background in Sports Medicine applications geared toward the competitive athlete, specifically so for the sport of Fencing. Ian has worked with USA Fencing Sports medicine since Summer 2011 and continues to do so today, providing Medical coverage of national and International Tournaments. He holds an Associate of Science in Exercise science, a Bachelors in Athletic Training and is continuing toward his Doctorate of Physical Therapy at Marist College.
